Appointment-based care
Outpatient Treatment
Standard outpatient treatment consists of scheduled appointments while you continue living at home. It may include counseling, medication management, or both. Frequency depends on clinical needs and can change over time.
Educational information, not a diagnosis or personalized treatment recommendation. A qualified clinician can help assess your needs.
What can outpatient care include?
Services may involve individual therapy, groups, family support with consent, and treatment for co-occurring mental health conditions. Care can be in person or through telehealth when suitable and available. Peer support can complement professional treatment, but it does not replace medical assessment or prescribed care.
Is it suitable as a first step?
Some people start with outpatient care; others use it after more intensive treatment. A clinical assessment should consider symptoms, withdrawal risk, health conditions, support, and ability to attend. You do not need to complete residential care before discussing outpatient treatment.
Keeping treatment connected
Ask how the therapist, medication prescriber, and other clinicians coordinate with your permission. Make a plan for worsening symptoms, missed appointments, and prescription continuity. A return to substance use is a reason to seek reassessment, not to abandon care.
How this connects to other treatment
If occasional appointments are not enough, compare intensive outpatient (iop). Our guide to medications for addiction treatment explains another option to discuss with a clinician. You can also compare all treatment options before contacting programs.
Treatment should address the specific condition, not just provide a schedule. Read about opioid addiction treatment, alcohol addiction, or co-occurring mental health conditions for additional context.
Questions to ask a provider
- How often will appointments take place?
- Can you coordinate with my existing prescriber?
- What support is available if symptoms worsen between visits?

Find care and confirm services
When you are ready, browse outpatient treatment providers. Directory listings do not establish clinical suitability, availability, or insurance coverage; confirm these with each provider.
