Structured outpatient care
Intensive Outpatient (IOP)
Intensive outpatient treatment provides coordinated care across multiple sessions each week while you live outside the program. It offers more structure than standard outpatient appointments, but less daytime treatment than many partial hospitalization programs.
Educational information, not a diagnosis or personalized treatment recommendation. A qualified clinician can help assess your needs.
What services can I expect?
An IOP may include group and individual therapy, recovery skills, family sessions with consent, and medication support or referrals. Evening or virtual appointments may be available, but not every program offers them. Ask how your plan is individualized instead of assuming every attendee receives the same services.
Can I work while attending?
Some schedules allow work, education, or caregiving alongside treatment. Feasibility depends on attendance requirements, travel, your health, and responsibilities outside sessions. Confirm the actual timetable before enrollment and ask how missed sessions are managed.
When is a different level needed?
IOP does not provide continuous supervision. Significant withdrawal risk, an unsafe living situation, or acute mental health symptoms may require another setting. Reassessment should happen if symptoms worsen; needing more support is not a personal failure.
How this connects to other treatment
If you need more daytime support, read about partial hospitalization (php). Our guide to outpatient treatment explains another option to discuss with a clinician. You can also compare all treatment options before contacting programs.
Treatment should address the specific condition, not just provide a schedule. Read about opioid addiction treatment, alcohol addiction, or co-occurring mental health conditions for additional context.
Questions to ask a provider
- What is the weekly schedule and minimum attendance?
- Are medication and individual therapy appointments included?
- How do you decide when someone needs more or less intensive care?

Find care and confirm services
When you are ready, browse intensive outpatient (iop) providers. Directory listings do not establish clinical suitability, availability, or insurance coverage; confirm these with each provider.
