Overnight care

Residential & Inpatient Treatment

Residential treatment provides a live-in environment with structured addiction care. Hospital-based inpatient treatment generally provides more intensive medical or psychiatric support. Although the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, staffing and clinical capabilities can differ substantially.

Educational information, not a diagnosis or personalized treatment recommendation. A qualified clinician can help assess your needs.

What does a typical program include?

Programs may combine individual and group therapy, medication management, recovery education, and discharge planning. Family involvement may be available with your consent. Length of stay varies with assessed needs, progress, funding, and program design; a fixed number of days is not a guarantee of recovery.

When might overnight care help?

A clinician may recommend a live-in setting when a person needs a structured environment, has substantial support needs, or cannot safely participate in treatment while living at home. Acute medical or psychiatric instability may require a hospital rather than a residential program. Residential care is not automatically a substitute for medical detox.

Planning for daily life and discharge

Ask about visiting, work and phone access, accessibility, privacy, medication policies, and support for co-occurring conditions. Begin discharge planning early: confirm housing, transportation, prescriptions, and the next treatment appointment rather than waiting until the final day.

How this connects to other treatment

If withdrawal needs medical attention, first discuss medical detox. Our guide to partial hospitalization (php) explains another option to discuss with a clinician. You can also compare all treatment options before contacting programs.

Treatment should address the specific condition, not just provide a schedule. Read about opioid addiction treatment, alcohol addiction, or co-occurring mental health conditions for additional context.

Questions to ask a provider

  • Is this hospital-based inpatient care or residential care?
  • Which medical and mental health staff are available on site?
  • How will you coordinate care after I leave?

Before enrolling, use our insurance and cost guide to check coverage, authorization, and out-of-pocket costs. If cannabis policy matters to you, review the cannabis policy guide and confirm the facility's current rules directly.

Find care and confirm services

When you are ready, browse residential & inpatient treatment providers. Directory listings do not establish clinical suitability, availability, or insurance coverage; confirm these with each provider.

For an immediate medical emergency, call 911. Call or text 988 for a suicide or mental health crisis.
