Withdrawal management

Medical Detox

Medical detox helps a person manage withdrawal with clinical assessment, monitoring, and medication when appropriate. It addresses immediate physical risks, but it is not a complete treatment for a substance use disorder.

Educational information, not a diagnosis or personalized treatment recommendation. A qualified clinician can help assess your needs.

Who may need medical supervision?

Withdrawal risk depends on the substance, duration and amount of use, previous withdrawal complications, other medications, and overall health. Alcohol and benzodiazepine withdrawal can be life-threatening. Do not abruptly stop these substances without medical guidance. A clinician should assess whether outpatient monitoring or a setting with round-the-clock medical support is appropriate.

What happens during detox?

An intake assessment reviews substance use, physical and mental health, and current medications. Staff develop a monitoring and symptom-management plan and coordinate the next stage of care. Ask who provides medical coverage overnight, how emergencies are handled, and whether the program can continue prescribed addiction medications.

What happens afterward?

Withdrawal management alone does not address the full range of factors that sustain addiction. Before discharge, arrange ongoing treatment and follow-up. After a period without opioids, reduced tolerance increases overdose risk if use resumes. Ask about overdose prevention, naloxone, and continuing medications for opioid use disorder.

How this connects to other treatment

After stabilization, some people benefit from residential & inpatient treatment. Our guide to medications for addiction treatment explains another option to discuss with a clinician. You can also compare all treatment options before contacting programs.

Treatment should address the specific condition, not just provide a schedule. Read about opioid addiction treatment, alcohol addiction, or co-occurring mental health conditions for additional context.

Questions to ask a provider

  • What medical monitoring is available, including overnight?
  • Can you manage my specific withdrawal risks and prescribed medications?
  • Will I leave with a confirmed follow-up appointment?
